Tower of God Season Two Episode 09 – Quick Summary
In Tower of God Season 2 episode 09, “One-Winged Devil,” Khun and his team are looking for the Devil of the Right Arm. Turns out they’re not the only one: Wangnan Ja and his team are also looking for that man. The reason? Horyang Kang has a hidden history with the man. How did they meet? Why is Horyang Kang so hesitant to talk about it? And what connection do Horyang Kang and the Devil of the Right Arm have with Viole?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.
Favorite Quote from Tower of God Season Two Episode 09
This team has come together in the years since they were formed. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Horyang Kang told the story of how he came to have an Ignition Weapon planted within him. It was a tragic tale – pretty much in keeping with the whole Tower vibe. Basically, Horyang Kang and someone named Beniamino Cassano had been experimental subjects. As kids, of course, because experimenting with kids is about as evil as one can get.
They became separated, and Horyang Kang has been looking for his friend ever since. Once he saw the picture, he knew he’d have to go find him – even if the whole thing was a trap.
In the silence after Horyang Kang told his story, Wangnan Ja spoke up and said that they’d all go see him together – the whole team with Horyang Kang. Horyang Kang was shocked. So much so that Wangan Ja asked if he’d said something strange.
“Nope,” Hon Akraptor said (11:36). “That was totally in character for you.”
What’s funny is that I said almost the same thing in my notes!
Favorite Moment from Tower of God Season Two Episode 09
Even in the Tower of God, there are some kind-hearted folks. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Showing us the experimentation performed on Horyang Kang and Beniamino Cassano helped set the tone for the episode. Specifically, it laid out just how brutal the world of the Tower can be. That, in turn, formed the emotional frame for my favorite moment.
The night before the whole team was supposed to meet Cassano, Horyang Kang waited for Viole (I wonder when I can just start calling him Bam again) alone. Horyang Kang wondered if maybe Viole had a similar genesis. After all, Viole had demonstrated that he, too, has an embedded Ignition Weapon.
Viole said he could not say, which prompted Horyang Kang to try to beat it out of him. They fought until Viole froze after being accused that FUG might be connected to the experiment. Instead of just punching through Viole’s face, though, Horyang Kang pulled his punch.
I thought it felt poignant when he said (16:01), “Please tell me.” He really just wanted to know.
Horyang Kang just wanted to know. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Turns out what Viole meant to say was that he did not know, so he could not say. He explained what he did know, which was that FUG had subjected him to something. When he had awakened, he felt the new power within.
His question answered, Horyang Kang prepared to leave to meet Cassano right away. Viole pointed out the whole thing might be a trap.
“All the more reason I can’t drag the rest of you into this,” Horyang Kang said with obvious sincerity (18:40). “You understand that, don’t you?”
It struck me that here was this guy who’s been experimented on. He was someone who had every reason to be angry and resentful. Yet, because of who he was, and because of the influence of his team, he wanted what was best for them. Instead of placing them in danger, he wanted to face it alone. I like characters like that!

I really liked Horyang Kang’s back story, it made a character I already liked a bit even more interesting. The one little problem I had with this episode was that we haven’t seen enough of the team together for me to really care that one of the members is leaving. In the story Bam’s team has been together for two years, but we didn’t see hardly any of that. We didn’t see them become friends or learn to care about each other. So, yeah I liked the character because I tend to like gentle giant types, but it was hard for me to really visualize why the team would care.
I missed seeing (participating in!) the bonding, too. I’m not sure if the original manhwa skipped those years, too, or if this was an anime-only thing. But it degraded my attachment to the characters and their situation.
Which is a long-winded way of just saying “I agree!”
