TRINITY SEVEN Episode 2 Review – Quick Summary

In TRINITY SEVEN Episode 2, “Prison Lock and Grimoire Security,” it seemed that Arata Kasuga had attracted an admirer: Arin Kannazuki. In an act so obvious that all of his classmates noticed, Arin stared hard at Arata. Though for some strange reason, she tried to deny it. What’s her deal? Later, something traps Arata in his room with Selina Sherlock, Levi Kazama, and Lilith Asami. Who would do such a thing? What are they trying to accomplish? And just how much does Arata’s grimoire, the Astil Codex, know about it?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Favorite Quote from TRINITY SEVEN Episode 2

You know, I’ve come to respect Levi’s academic curiosity. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

In my review of the previous episode, I mentioned that I liked how in TRINITY SEVEN, the girls are as open with their sexuality as Arata, the male lead. Instead of Arata trying to force himself on any of these women, for the most part, they’re co conspirators.

Until this episode, Levi seemed to be leading the bunch. Arin’s right there with her now, but for the second time in a row, Levi had my favorite quote. She, Arata and Selina had been trapped in Arata’s room. Lilith had an emergency: She had to pee, and she had found she had a hard time holding it.

Levi and Selina were near panic. Arata remained calm but reflected how bad it could be, because “the bizarre appeal of it is just plain dangerous!” Leave it to Arata to so succinctly sum up their problem.

As Lilith struggled to maintain control of her bladder, a slightly blushing Levi looked on and said in an almost disbelieving voice (10:48), “You know, I kind of want to see this.”

Honesty is always the best policy. And what a little scholar, following her curiosity like that!

Best in Show Moment for TRINITY SEVEN Episode 2

Lilith could not disagree with Arin’s motives — though she really wanted to. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: These Mages are Serious

In my review of the previous episode, I made no secret of how much I enjoy just how forward and flirty characters like Levi are. Part of the appeal is that I like equality. If Arata can flirt with Levi, then it only makes sense that Levi can flirt with Arata. It’s more than that, of course. Seeing Levi initiate that kind of activity is just so darned fun!

Not to mention Arin’s unabashed attempt to become Arata’s bride. It makes perfect sense with her character. At the same time, instead of seeing Lilith blushing and flustered all the time, it’s funny to see Arata almost freak out when Arin tried to follow him into the restroom.

But that’s not the show’s only appeal for me. I really enjoy a show with an interesting magic system. This show had talked about Thema before, but in this episode, we found out just how dangerous such a thing could be. There are seven Themas, and they are based around the seven deadly sins. A Thema is like an area of focus within the magic arts (sciences?). For example, Wrath inflicts damage, and as we found in this episode, Arina’s Thema is Ruina, a subclass of Wrath.

Lilith had begun to describe the idea of Thema and Archiva when they got interrupted. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Mages store their magic energy in the Archiva, and they access and manipulate that energy using their Thema.

Sounds interesting, right? Having areas of study focused on the Seven Deadly sins feels like it could give the show some spice! It does more than that, though. It’s not enough for a Mage to just study. A Mage has to immerse themselves in their Thema. They have to explore its depths to increase their abilities. One of those explorations gave me my favorite moment of the episode.

Delivery: Arin is Quite the Student

In the infirmary, Arata asked Lilith to help him talk to Arin. Arata wanted to know why Arin had imprisoned them in his room. The revelation that Arin was the culprit came as a shock to Lilith. If she didn’t like the confession, she really didn’t like it when Arin admitted that she had only intended to trap Arata, and she only sprung the trap with all four of them because she didn’t want to wait. Apparently, despite her calm demeanor, Arin is not the patient sort.

The ultimate reason, though, was the headmaster, Biblia Gakuenchou. He had told her Arata’s Demon Lord persona might create another breakdown phenomenon. Lilith could not figure out why that mattered, so she offered to show Arata and offered her palm.

Remember: Arin has been saying she’s his wife. She’s expressed an interest in him. So when she offered him her palm, he didn’t hesitate. He touched his hand to hers. The instant his skin touched her ring, the band flared and a gust of magic flowed over them. She immediately connected to her Archiva and executed her Thema, which invoked her Magus mode. Lilith could still not figure out why. But Arata didn’t have time to wonder, because he had collapsed to the floor in agony.

Arata’s grimoire had been limiting his power to protect him. Arin had destroyed that protection. Now, Arata’s power flowed, uncontrolled, and created the breakdown phenomenon. It began to devour the world around them.

As soon as Arata touched her ring, Arin went into Magus mode. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Lilith confronted her, but Arin’s response is my favorite moment. “…This is my Thema,” she said (19:08). “… No matter how immoral the act, it’s a mage’s duty to study it. Isn’t that correct, Sensei?”

Lilith had no response. Apparently, this school takes magic so seriously that even threatening to destroy the world is in bounds, if it furthers the study of magic. That’s insanely dangerous, and it’s reckless. And it’s seriously cool!
