Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 10 Review – Quick Summary
In Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 10, “The Two Teachers,” we take a trip down memory lane to when Fran and Shiela were Niké’s apprentices. As well as mortal enemies. Niké took on a job to root out a gang of thieves named the Curios Company in the town Qunorts. Somehow, the gang had tools capable of disarming the local witches and mages. The gang also mounted an anti-mage propaganda effort that painted magic users as tools of the devil. Niké, wanting to teach her apprentice to work together, gave the job to Fran and Sheila. Can the two overcome their mutual animosity to work together? Or will they sabotage each other’s work — and risk capture and death at the hand of the Curios Company?

Favorite Quote from Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 10
You know, if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it with style. Capture from the Hulu stream.
Niké had been teaching Fran and Sheila all sorts of different skills and techniques. One night, she asked them what they would do if they lost their wands. After all, Niké was a powerful, accomplished witch, and she wanted to make sure her apprentices were ready for anything.
As a sign of their constant bickering, both wanted to train in a different technique. Sheila wanted to learn martial arts. Fran wanted to learn the bow. So, Niké split the different and taught them what she wanted: knife fighting.
Both apprentices were a little surprised. They were even more surprised when she gave them a quick demonstration and told them the most important thing.
“When you draw them,” she said, demonstrating the action (08:38), “do it like this, in a sexy way.”
I’ve give her this: Niké had sexy knife drawing down to art.
Best in Show Moment for Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 10
Looks like Fran paid attention to Niké’s lessons! Capture from the Funimation stream.
Setup: Style Matters
Am I the only one who thinks that Sheila is the incarnation of Saki from Zombie Land Saga in witch form? I mean, she even has the motorcycle broom. Though her hair’s a bit less robust…
Look, it’s not subtle, and it’s not Earth-shattering, and it’s not wildly innovative. But my favorite moment builds on my favorite quote for the episode. And yes, I’m a sucker for enemies becoming friends.
Remember how Niké not only taught Fran and Sheila knife fighting skills, but taught them to draw their knives in a sexy way? Well, in the climatic battle of this episode, that’s what happened.
Neither Fran nor Sheila knew how to take Niké’s lesson to draw knives in a sexy way. Seems like the lesson took hold, though! Capture from the Funimation stream.
Fran and Sheila both apparently let themselves be captured by the Curio Company. It seems the plan didn’t quite work out, though, because they were both wand-less and tied up on the floor. So, what’s a witch to do?
Delivery: Living Up to Their Teachers’ Standards
The two witches, hands bound, sat back to back on the floor. It looked like Sheila gave the suggestion to Fran, who wasted no time in finding Sheila’s knives and using them to slice through the ropes.
The gang’s leader knew something was up, and she confronted Sheila. I’ll saw this for Sheila (and Fran as well). The two had no lack of confidence. In fact, comparing their interactions with Curio Company and how flashbacks showed the local mages’ experience, it looks like Niké only chose apprentices were were more than a little capable. How did Sheila manifest that confidence?
First, she spat in the leader’s face. That’s always a good way to throw your enemy off balance. Then, she gave a head-but that would have made Tanjirou Kamado proud. In the chaos that followed, almost as if it were a choreographed dance move, Fran and Sheila threw off their severed ropes and spun.
Both drew their knives in a decidedly sexy way.
Sheila and Fran were in perfect sync as they drew their knives. Capture from the Funimation stream.
What came next was a fun beat down. Sheila did indeed seem to be the witch incarnation of Saki from Zombie Land Saga, because she had some serious close quarter combat skills. But for me, my favorite moment was in how elegant the two of them looked as they drew their blades.
I’ve always had the theory that early elements of the patriarchal societies did everything to discredit witches, because witch knowledge and power threatened them. Seeing their combination of beauty and power felt like it reinforced my theory, because I know one thing: I would have a hard time restraining anyone, but seeing their beauty and grace? I’m pretty sure I’d wonder if I were on the wrong side.
Darn my acceptance of the Hellenistic concepts of beauty!
What did you think of Sheila’s motorcycle broom? What was your Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!
