Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 7 Review – Quick Summary
In Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 7, “The Wall Etched by Travelers / The Grape-Stomping Girl,” Elaina made two stops on this week’s leg of her journey. First, she intended to visit a town that she’d read about with her mother. The town had been divided by a wall, and a witch that looked very much like Elaina had dispensed wisdom to ease political tensions. But another witch had accidentally upset the balance. What will Elaina find when she arrives? In the second stop, Elaina visited a village that competed economically for wine domination with the village next door. The other village had a secret marketing weapon, and the village elder wanted Elaina’s help. Can he convince to her sign up? What could he possibly offer her?

Favorite Quote from Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 7
Saya was able to convert her boundless devotion to Elaina into a great idea. Capture from the Hulu stream.
It was nice seeing Saya again. I have to say that her naiveté and her absolute dedication to Elaina just light up the screen. This week, the cities on either side of the wall had asked her association for help. The advice that Niké had given then 10 years ago had started to wear thin. Sure, travelers were still writing their messages on both sides of the wall, but it was no longer new and exiting. The cities wanted a fresh idea.
While she considered the question, Saya asked to borrow the elder’s knife. He gave it to her, just as he’d given it to Niké. He stood watching Saya begin writing. It was only when he looked closer that he realized she was writing love letters to Elaina all over the place.
Alarmed, he yelled (06:41), “This wall isn’t a place for you to carve your carnal desires!”
I have to give Saya credit. She’s true to her feelings!
Best in Show Moment for Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 7
If Rosemary thought that criticizing Elaina’s looks would convince her to give up, the grape-stomping maiden was sorely mistaken. I mean, no one has a stronger belief in their beauty than Elaina! Capture from the Hulu stream.
Setup: How Do You Convince Elaina to Do Something?
The second story was a subtle, gently humorous send up of capitalism and marketing. The inhabitants of both villages are wine-makers, and they were both proud of their product. However, one of the villages puts the picture of the statuesque, heart-stoppingly beautiful Rosemary on their label. She’s so beautiful, in fact, that the village elder from the other village, the one who greets Elaina, is adoringly holding a bottle of Rosemary’s wine in his arms. Not his own village’s vintage.
Rosemary’s image, and the idea that she “lovingly” stomps the grapes for each bottle, was too much for the simple village males. Much to the consternation of the village women, the men all wanted to buy the other village’s wine. The village elder asks Elaina if she’ll become the maiden who will lovingly stomp their grapes.
Dude. Ever heard of personal space? Capture from the Hulu stream.
She’s not at all excited about the proposition. In fact, she doesn’t say yes. The village elder just announces to everyone that she did. All of the men in the village go wild. They spill in through the doors and windows. One man even announces that he’d like Elaina to step on him instead of the grapes.
I don’t think these guys get out much.
Meanwhile, the village’s women glare. If I had to make a complaint against this episode, it’d be that these women had a lot more power than they seemed to be willing to use. Though maybe I should give them more credit. Maybe they knew how this would play out, and they were ready to let the men teach themselves a lesson.
Delivery: You Appeal to Elaina’s Vanity
I’m not sure how they did it, but they convinced Elaina to get dressed in the grape-stomping dress. She was wildly unenthusiastic about her role. She seemed to be thinking of a way to let these crazy men down gently. That is, until Rosemary showed up.
She stood on a cart drawn by several men from her village. The village chief who had welcomed Elaina was beside himself. He really, really wanted Rosemary’s autograph. Elaina looked on, decidedly unimpressed by the power fetishes have over some men.
Her detached attitude vanished when Rosemary asked (16:54), “Who in the world is this undersized girl in grape-stomping maiden clothes?” When it became clear that the chief intended to start a marketing war against Rosemary with Elaina as their label’s grape-stomping maid, Rosemary could barely withhold her scorn.
There’s no denying that Rosemary has a certain appeal. I mean, just look at those eyes! Capture from the Hulu stream.
“Oh, I see,” she said (17:03). “You can’t beat me, so you’re planning to have this thin girl step lovingly on some grapes?”
Elaina’s reaction to “thin” was humorous. She was not at all pleased. But the final straw was when Rosemary said (17:14), “Her face is just okay, too.” Her later comments about Elaina having the body of a child was just piling on. The damage had been done.
As Rosemary’s human-powered cart took her away, Elaina quietly said (17:41), “Chief, I’ll do it.”
She was pretty fired up about stomping the grapes, too! I enjoyed watching the show poke fun at Elaina’s vanity. Not only was it just funny, it showed the series is well aware of its main character’s strong self-regard.
