Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 09 – Quick Summary
In Wistoria: Want and Sword episode 09, “Praxis Begins” Lihanna led her team into the dungeon. Will, thinking his skills would impress his teammates, was shocked to learn that most of them could handle themselves very well. Lihanna, in particular, was a genius at close-quarters-combat. Will felt abashed; even Wignall began to question Lihanna’s decision to include Will. But all of that changed in an instant – and even Will felt his skills put to the test. Can they survive until the teachers reach them? Are there even any teachers left?

I think Wignall knew what Will was going to say before he said it. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Wignall tried.
I thought his backstory meshed well with this story – he’s as much an outcast within the world of elves as Will is within the world of mages. Wignall even saw himself as the weakest of his kind.
But that didn’t stop him from fighting. He and Will ended up together on the eleventh level. They’d been attacked by some huge critters that looked like enormous blind orcs. Emphasis on the “blind” part. Will attacked the multiple targets in front of them. That left Wignall to handle the one behind.
His first attack failed. The monster lunged. Wignall tried – he knew he would not have time for a proper counter, so he resolved to use an illusion to protect himself. He cloaked his area in illusionary flames.
Will objected. The monster, completely ignoring the illusion, surged forward. Wignall figured his ineptitude had caught up with him. He prepared to die. That’s when Will distracted the monster with a knife throw – buying enough time for Will to cross the distance and slice the monster in half.
“Gergesa don’t have eyes,” Will said (21:24). I think he intentionally ignored the terror on Wignall’s face. “So their sense of smell developed to compensate. Illusions won’t work on them.”It’s been almost two years since I’ve updated the Caw Out Awards. This would have qualified as Biggest Understatement of the Week!

Turns out ants weren’t a problem for Lihanna. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I was wondering how the story would portray Will’s contribution to Lihanna’s party. If he was too useful too quickly, it wouldn’t be as dramatic. Though, to be honest, I would have liked to see Julius and Sion taken down a peg.
I mean, seriously – how did both of those guys completely forget that Will trounced them? In front of witnesses? They are just not respectful of a good stomping.
But I like the direction this episode took. Did the arrogant Julius or Sion prove useful? Nah. It was Lihanna who turned out to be adept at close-quarters-combat. Quite adept. Will was just getting ready to defend the team against monstrous Crimson Ants – a whole swarm of them – when Lihanna started sparking.
Will was ready to go. He thought he’d have to defend the team.
Will was ready to do his part. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Wignall told him not to worry. He asked if Will was unaware of Lihanna’s family’s reputation. Turns out she’s from a line of knights. Chanting an incantation, she ran head-long at the warm.
And blew clean through them, parts of any bodies raining all around.
Will was impressed – and devastated. It was interesting seeing him having to deal with the idea that Lihanna could so obviously fulfill the one role he thought was his. It was a good character moment. And it was good seeing that it wasn’t one of the arrogant, boasting morons who would pull it off, but the assuming Lihanna. That’s real power.
Bragging and bullying never impressed me. I prefer real strength.

Ah, so this story is going in the direction of, “An unprecedented crisis, the likes of which no one could predict, strikes during the test, giving the protagonist a chance to shine properly and the characters a chance to bond and grow.” Rather than what I was fearing, “Things just go wrong and fingers get pointed.” At the very least, the members of this group will be able to trust each other quite a bit more than they could at the start, addressing their greatest weakness. I didn’t really see any of them working together thus far, but Wignall is getting a crash course in working with Will, and I suspect it will be very good for him. So we have the two low-level outcasts of their respective peoples together, the two insufferably proud fools together, and the two girls with hidden depths of their power together. This should be interesting.
There’s definitely some trust-forging going on here! Wignall’s learning how much he can trust Will, and I have a feeling Lihanna is learning she can rely on Colette.
Sion and Julius, on the other hand…
I hope Wignall and Will become friends. There’s a lot of deconstructing going on in this episode and the next that would set the context for that.
Julius and Sion were still MIA at the end of the ep, IIRC. I hope they are having an entertaining time.
“How can you stay do calm?” I think Wignall is a believer. Will is going to be a good influence on him.
I flashed back to a scene from Young Justice, where Artemis demands of Robin how he can stay so calm in their present crisis. He answers, “Practice. I’ve been doing this since I was nine.”
Experience counts for something, and Will’s got more of it than Wignall right now.
Given his background, I think Wignall has a lot to gain from Will.
I’m really enjoying the interaction between Will and Wignall. It feels spontaneous — and it paints Will in a positive light. Finally!
