Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 12 – Quick Summary

In Wistoria: Want and Sword episode 12, “Wand and Sword,” the ice crystal that Rosti gave Will did the trick. It absorbed and transformed Sion’s power and merged it with Will’s sword. With that energized sword, Will destroyed the Evil Grand Duke. Exhausted, on the edge of collapse, the survivors mustered enough strength – only for a horde of new monsters to show up to spoil the party. Can Will, Sion, Colette, and the rest summon the strength to fight?

Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 12: Lihanna had to spend years perfecting that expression

This expression is the result of years of practice and effort. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Wistoria’s a generous show. In addition to engrossing animation, it also hits a lot of the tropes for its genre. Now, finally, at the end of the first season, get a “Say ahhh” moment. Between Colette and Lihanna. I’m very cool with that.

It happened as she and her team were recuperating in the infirmary. She gave a gracious thank you speech just before her stomach growled. Loudly. Much to her embarrassment. Colette, gentle and helpful soul that she is, offered to share the apple she had just peeled and sliced (probably with the intention of doing the “Say ahhh” thing with Will).

Lihanna gratefully accepted. Once. Twice. Thrice. I’m not sure what comes after thrice, and I’m too tired to look it up. Colette grew more and more incredulous until she finally asked what was up. Lihanna tried to explain that her magic used a lot of calories. In a firm voice that quavered only a little, she asserted she was not, in fact, a glutton.

“It really is the truth,” she said, her expression proclaiming her hurt feeling that anyone would question her (11:40).

She absolutely nailed the expression and tone of voice. I was impressed!

Favorite Moment from Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 12

Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 12: Finn exuded self-confidence

Okay, I admit it – I love the ‘secret society’ or relatively unknown society coming back to prominence’ tropes. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: There’s a Finn in This Series, Too?

I liked seeing the announcement that season 2 is coming. I’m curious to learn more about this world. I’m curious to see how many plushy versions of Will Elfaria can fit into her room. Did you watch the ED in this episode? She’s really piling them on!

Seeing Aaron Masterias Oldking rescue Will and company almost felt like a deus ex machina moment (or maybe a magus ex machina). I mean, the dude just showed up out of nowhere. But there are two reasons I decided it doesn’t bother me. First, Will and Sion, with Rosti’s help, took care of the Evil Grand Duke. That was the Big Bad; they handled it. So that was cool. The next wave of monsters was just for the sake of tension.

The second reason is that the scene introduced us to Finn (who I’m sure bears only a coincidental resemblance to Finn from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? – right?). Finn took an instant liking to Will. Or maybe I should say that he displayed an instant interest in Will. In either event, it set up my favorite moment.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 12: Finn saw something in Will

Will seemed to sense something about Finn – and vice versa. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

There were a lot of enjoyable snippets in this episode. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that when it seemed like it was ending, I tapped my iPad (I was on the elliptical) to see if it was really near the end – and it was. It honestly seemed to take up two or three minutes. That said, I picked a moment that seemed to deepen the world and set the stage for future developments.

We saw that Finn expressed an interest in Will. At the time, it seemed like Finn was a supporter – someone who carried supplies for the party. That’s not an exalted position; it’s not someone who’s in command.

Delivery: Finn’s Hidden Authority

That’s  why, when he just waltzed into the offices of headmistress Caldron Anouve, I took notice. Why would a supporter be so bold? What would a supporter have to say to the headmistress? Wouldn’t it be more reasonable for the king dude to talk to her?

After exchanging some news and insights about the latest excursion, including the news that someone was using the deep dungeons for experimentation, Finn, smiling, said (16:36), “Now, to get down to business…”

He then proceeded to step up onto her desk and sit crossed-legged in front of her. Still smiling, though it’s clear by now it wasn’t one of those happy smiles, he said (16:42), “Caldron, why didn’t tell me anything about that boy? Your lot looks after the wands. Swords are supposed to be my territory.”

Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 12: Finn sat on the headmistress' desk, as pretty as you please

That’s not something one usually does on a headmistress’ desk. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

That’s one of those moments that deepens a world. I had questions about Finn before. I had more questions now, but they were focused and moved me in the direction that the writer wanted (I hope!).

I’m not sure if I think details like this shine because I had such low expectations, but I know this for sure. It increased an already high level of desire to see a second season! And seriously – does this guy relate to DanMachi? We’ve already seen Lefiya Viridis and Filvis Challia. Is the Finn from DanMachi actually a member of the Finn tribe? Even if there’s no relation whatsoever, it’s fun to think about. And that’s pretty much sums up this show: fun to watch. I hope I have time to review the next season!

What did you think of Will and Sion’s fight? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. My blog will be up on Friday to cover Re:zero. I intended to experiment with one in the months leading up to Re:zero, but time got away from me, so I’ll just be making a bare-bones blog and adjust from there.

      1. It doesn’t have a URL yet. I will be making it today when I get home from work. I will post it here as soon as it’s up.

It will be really long, longer than anything I’ve posted on your blog, as I have a lot to say regarding my beliefs that Garfiel having hallucinations ’cause of his fear of death is a brilliant writing decision, Emilia not immediately recognizing Regulus not being poor writing based on all that was going on in Season 2 for her, Episodes 12, 13, and 51 showing contrasts between Crusch and Priscilla’s approach to acquiring power, Priscilla probably went through a similar although not 1-to-1 experience as I did with trauma due to shame, Al almost certainly also having been summoned with the additional context that Subaru realized that Hoshin was summoned, and more about the episode.

What I’ll be most interested in talking about are stuff I can make immediate connections to from previous seasons, but I will also cover the stuff that is new material with no prior context.

      2. My domain is thoroughwatch.org. I have not yet made a post yet, but I plan to by the end of the night.

          1. I ended up not knowing what to do to start the blog. I created a domain name and linked the domain to WP Engine, but I’m not sure what to do after that.

I ended up publishing a post that went nowhere on WordPress since I hadn’t gotten web hosting at the time.

              1. The problem appears to be that I didn’t point the DNS to WP Engine. I had tried to automatically update the DNS, but it didn’t work, so I guess I’ll have to manually do it.

                    1. I see it’s up! I’ll read the post later today.

There’s a lot to formatting and running a blog. To start with, log in as the administration and play around with Appearance -> Themes – > Customize. I use the theme named Editorial Plus (it’s a free theme).

You can preview different themes without changing which one you’re using. That’s useful when you’re trying to figure out what looks close.
