Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 01: Favorites – Quick Summary
In Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 episode 01, “Barrier Day,” Will Serfort has to pass one more test to qualify for the Tower. Just one more test. But that test is coming from Professor Edward Serfence, who absolutely detests Will. What are the odds he’ll give a fair test? And if Will fails, what will happen to his dream of joining Elfaria in the Tower?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.
Favorite Quote from Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 01
Humility is a vastly underrated virtue. It’s a key to most of the rest. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
It’s the sign of a healthy friendship when folks can bring out the best in one another. My favorite is from one the people Will befriended in the first season, and it shows that he’s been a good influence.
Lihanna Owenzaus was at the top of her class. Practiced lightning magic, which was seriously good from the perspective of offense. And she solidly got her ass kicked. It took her learning teamwork with the help of Will (for example, back in episode 11) for her to survive. In fact, she did more than survive. She levelled up. And apparently, she hasn’t forgotten who to thank.
In this episode, she and the illusion elf Wignall Lindor were looking for Will. He disappeared after failing the test, which supposedly meant the end of his dream of joining Elfaria. The two of them talked about what they’d learned by fighting by Will’s side.
“I learned things, too,” she said (06:56). “My sense of inferiority and my cowardly heart… I learned they could be transformed into that magic called courage.”
Not only do I think it’s cool that Will had friends who cared enough to go looking for him. He has friends who are self-aware. It’s hard to over-state the importance of that trait.
Favorite Moment from Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 01
Colette truly cared about Will. And she didn’t understand how Elfaria could stand by as he put himself through this. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Timing’s Important
I’d forgotten how gorgeous this show can be. The animation’s bright and fluid, and the character models are top notch. I even like some of the side characters like Ellenor Ljos Alf, who I refer to as “the hot elf” in my notes.
Yeah, there’s probably some social rule or other that I’m breaking. Still, one has to admit that Ellenor has a pleasant aesthetic.
I also have to applaud the strategic decision of when to strike. Marze said it (23:02): “By activating the Great Barrier, the Magia Vander used up all their magic. They’re out of commission for a while.” Well played villains. Well played!
What can I say? I like elves. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Despite the drama of that moment, my favorite was a little more quiet. A little more personally sad. It reminds me of how sorry I feel for Colette Loire. She adores Will, but unless this series goes for a harem ending, she has precisely zero chance with him. The dude’s utterly devoted to Elfaria, and he’s probably not even aware that Colette has feelings for him.
And if ever started to think about it, I’m sure that Rosti Nauman would do something about it. Which is interesting, given my favorite moment and some fan theories about who Rosti really is.
Will studied his butt off. He studied so hard he fell asleep in the library. Colette, bringing him a late night snack, found him fast asleep. She almost gave into the temptation to kiss him when Tosti interrupted.
That flustered Colette, of course. She was embarrassed! But not so embarrassed that she couldn’t focus on the real issue: her concern for Will.
Delivery: Colette’s Heartfelt Support
“It’s true that I’m worried about him,” she said (08:32). Speaking almost as if she were confessing something deep to Rosti, she added, “Will is all worn out, but he still pushes himself so hard. He’s constantly battered and bruised. I hate the Magia Vander. Because of the spell Albis Vina cast, Will is always chasing after her. Yet she doesn’t do a thing. She’s merely waiting in the tower, and that’s just… I feel so sorry for Will.”
That moment resonated for me because of Colette’s authentic affection. She wasn’t just a fan-girl; she doesn’t seem to merely have a crush. She wants what’s best for Will. In that moment, she honestly thought that his pursuit of his childhood friend was both a burden, and an occasion for his powerful Magia Vander to ignore him.
In other words, that moment was by itself my favorite. But it added another touch of interest when the camera cut to Rosti. He looked stricken; he looked guilty. “I feel the same way,” he said (09:08).
Elfaria wasn’t happy about how things were going. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
The very next shot we see of Elfaria (09:24)? She wore an expression suspiciously similar to Rosti’s. Coincidence? I don’t think so. I think this moment hit a lot of the characters hard. Given that I like these guys, it’s a little hard to watch, but in a good way. I’m sure that somehow or another, Will will come out on top, along with his friends.
I’m looking forward to seeing how that happens!
What did you think of Edward’s choice of test question – was it really an act of mercy, or cruelty? What were your favorite moments? I’d love to hear in the comments!
