Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 04: Favorites – Quick Summary
In Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 episode 04, “And the Story Begins,” Fin succeeded in his mission to deliver a powerup for Will’s sword. With that boost, Will dispatched many of the remaining demons. But the devander remained, opposed only by a rapidly weakening Sion and a magic-depleted Colette. Can Will arrive in time? And if he does, can even his enhanced ability make a difference?

I had the impression she would liked to have argued the point, but, well… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Some of this show’s side characters keep me entertained. For example, though she’s only on screen a little bit, Clairie Serah left an impression. It’s not just that she’s alluring. It’s that she’s a bit of a mystery.
Clearly, she’s powerful. She stayed alive (apparently!) through most of the attacks in the previous couple of episodes. Though it might be more accurate to say she’s nimble. She dodged more attacks than she engaged head on.
In this episode, we found out that she has fairly bad luck. At least, that’s according to Edward Serfence. The evidence in this episode seems to back up his claim.
As he was making his way toward the massive battle between Will and the devander, Edward heard Clairie call out to him. He was surprised to see her alive. His surprise grew, perhaps just a bit, when she slipped off the roof and landed butt-first on the ground.
“Still alive, I see,” he observed drily (08:19). “As ever, your only forte is your rotten luck.”
“Oh, stuff it,” she said,
The lack of response showed she knew the guy was right. The narrative painted him as a reluctant (or maybe not so reluctant) antagonist, but he was still right.

The dude paused just long enough to get a lungful of air. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Elfaria the Unrestrainable
After this episode ended, I had to jump onto My Anime List to make sure this wasn’t the last episode. Nope! This really was the fourth episode of the second season, and there are more episodes to come.
Dramatically, I think it’s clear this is where the first arc ends. Heck, the title even gives it away. So I’ve decided to look at it as if it’s both the fulfillment of the promise of the first season, and the foundation for the next phase of the story.
I’ll tell you what I’d like to say were my favorite moments: anything with Elfaria. The force of her personality dominated this episode, even though she wasn’t directly in the action. Well, I suppose one could argue that she was present in some form at the end. But you know what I mean.
Will was in trouble, and Elfaria was going to help him, and that’s just the way it was. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I would loved to have named my favorite as the one where she strode toward the door. Cariott Incindia Wiseman flat out ordered her to stop; that no one was allowed to leave. In a light voice, she said that she had no intention of leaving. She just wanted to watch the battle from the balcony.
An instant later, she had created an ice sword.
“Oh, but,” she said, smiling (13:19). “I’m afraid my hand slipped.”
She won’t take no for an answer. If she wants to help Will, then she’s going to help Will. And heaven help anyone who gets in her way. Honestly, in a fight between her and any of the other Magia Vander, I’d bet on Elfaria.
And if she can team up with Will? Well, then, that brings up a big problem for the story. Because I haven’t seen any power that can give them a decent fight.
Delivery: Sion’s Loud Support
But that wasn’t my favorite moment.
Instead, I chose something a little smaller. A moment with a little more personal poignancy. We know Will has struggled with the derision he’s had to endure. In this episode, he even admitted that deep down, he hated the people who treated him like that – even as he resolved to save them. That’s what a hero does, isn’t it? So the moment I chose is one with cathartic meaning for Will.
All around the courtyard where he faced off against the devander, other magic students realized two very uncomfortable truths. First, that Will could, and was, going toe-to-toe (yes, I’m trying to set a cliche record this week) with the monster that they could barely even stand to gaze upon, and second, that they had treated him like utter crap all this time.
The devander was so beyond their capabilities that they could do nothing to help Will. So, feeling self conscious and miserable, they could only watch.
That is, until another student arrived who knew how he could help – how they could all help. Sion Ulster, having stood his ground against the devander, and having witnessed Will saving him yet again, sprinted onto the scene. He didn’t pause to catch his breath.
Grabbing the stone parapet, at the top of his lungs, he screamed (09:36), “Go!”
It didn’t take long for the others to follow Sion’s lead. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
His other friends, like Colette and Wignall Lindor, joined in. Soon, all the students yelled encouragement. But Sion had the insight and courage to start. He’s the one who inspired the others.
Certainly, will was busy with the fight. But I can only imagine how uplifting it had to feel to hear from Scion, then his closest friends, then the rest of those present encouraging him. That thought, that moment of wonder, is why I chose this as my favorite moment.
Though Will and Elfaria putting the devander down was a close second! What did you think of the conversation between Mercedes and Fin? What were your favorite moments? Let me know in the comments!
