Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 05: Favorites – Quick Summary
In Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 episode 05, “The Day of Departure,” the battle may have ended, but Will’s victory remains out of reach. Even as Fin and Caldron Anouve maneuver to decide Will’s fate, one thing remains clear: Will cannot cast magic. He cannot create a spell. So he doesn’t meet the criteria to ascend the tower. Is he destined to never see Elfaria again?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Sarissa has had better days. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
It’s really amazing how poorly the Magia Vander get along. In fact, it’s amazing they’ve managed not to kill each other long enough to maintain the barrier. I can’t think of any two of them who speak civilly to each other.
In this episode, they were discussing their next steps. Ellenor Ljos Alf pointed out that a previous fight had been pretty expensive for herself, Lefiya Viridis, and their entire faction. She wasn’t being weak; she was relaying important facts.
That’s not how Zeo Torzeus Reinbolt saw it. He asked if the elf was just scared. Of course, she took offense to that and fired off an attack that they felt – forcibly – down on the surface. Tore out quite a chunk of their meeting room, too.
The other Magia Vander projected shield spells as if this were a normal, every day thing. Iris (at least, I think it was Iris – the character designs share enough similarities that it’s hard to recognize her when she removes her glasses and lets her hair down) hid behind Aron Masterius Oldeking’s throne – as if that, too, were a normal, every day thing.
I had noticed that Elfaria wasn’t in the meeting. Can’t blame her, of course. But I feel bad for Sarissa Alfeld. First, she can’t seem to understand Elfaria at all. And second, when Elfaria doesn’t show up, she has to explain why. She’d been on her way to do just that when the fight erupted.
After Oldenking called a ceasefire, he called out to Sarissa. Her response is my favorite quote because of its brevity and its high, squeaky tone.
“Yes?!” she answered, the walls around her blasted to rubble. I can’t say that I blame her for her reaction!
Favorite Moment from Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 05
Sion steps up once again. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
After the kinetics and arc resolution in the previous episode, this episode shouldered the task of laying the groundwork for the next part of the story. The story mentioned an impending culling, presumably of the incoming students. That wasn’t ominous or anything. There was a disagreement between Fin, Iris, and Caldron, with Caldron seeming to win, at least for now. So it looks like things will continue to be interesting.
The major unresolved thread this episode had to tie up was what would happen to Will. He had no magic; he could not create a spell. So, how would he get into the tower? Of course, by this time, even the reader part of my brain (the part that tries not to project too far ahead to keep things fresh) had figured out: Will’s going into the tower. The only question was how?
I’m not sure what game Caldron’s playing, but she seems pretty good at it. She decided to come up with courage as a magical spell to put him in the tower and out of Fin’s reach. I’m not sure how the Caldron vs. Fin camps relate to Oldeking and the Magia Vander, but for now, she won.
Caldron wasn’t going to entertain any objections. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
But the way she won is what created my favorite moment. She could have just ordered it to be so. Instead, she asked that anyone who agreed should clap. Put another way, she let the crow decide with their applause.
Scary for Will, right? That was part of the drama. But it was also a great opportunity to Will’s supporters to act. And guess who acted first? Just as he was the first to cheer Will on in the previous episode, Sion stepped up again (). He was the first to clap from his position on stage.
Which was pretty cool, given that he was a member of one of those noble houses who looked down on Will. He took quite a risk. If he’d been the only one clapping, things might have gone badly for him. Colette, though, joined him almost immediately. So did the rest of his friends. Soon, the whole auditorium roared with everyone’s applause.
Not a bad way to kick off the next arc.
What did you think of Iris confronting Fin? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
