Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 08: Favorites – Quick Summary

In Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 episode 08, “Teachings of the Witch,” Julius fulled committed to teaching the controversial technique to Will. Of course, Julius had his own reasons, which absolutely did not include kindness. But Kreutz has other ideas and sends a goon squad to put a halt to the training. Can Julius fend them off? Can Will do so without magic? And just how many factions are there in this tower?

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 08: Shockingly, Julius was actually thinking things through

Is it just me, or does Julius seem like he’s mad a lot? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I was all set to hate this episode. The whole “Will’s almost there OH NO SOMETHING PREJUDICIAL HAPPENED” is wearing on me. So is the vibe that Julius is a complete prick and is just using Will. More on that later.

So when Will complained that not only did the Wis drained his strength, but he couldn’t get the hang of Julius’ idea, I braced myself for disappointment.

It got worse when Will piped up to say that he wanted to spend their time investigating the Wis. That made sense to me. It’s a wildcard and deserves their attention. So, I figured that the way this episode (and season) are going, Julius would get all shouty and insist on their current cost.

So, color me shocked (in a good way) when Julius uttered my favorite quote (03:04): “I’m already doing that!”

The show insists on keeping Will and Elfaria apart (and thereby stalling whatever developments could come after). So my expectations had dropped. This slightly different direction made me feel better about the episode.

Strange how little things can matter that much!

Favorite Moment from Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 08

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 08: Will saved Julius. Again.

Will was supremely clueless. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Teetering on the Edge

Okay, reading the Reddit thread (see below), I might be in the minority here. But Julius being such a difficult individual because his first crush went awry doesn’t seem that ridiculous. First, the kid’s been sheltered in a big way, so any emotional pain would hold magnified significance. Second, he’s a teen, so angst goes with the territory. Third, she was a very cute maid.

Yes, the power dynamic (at least) was wrong. I’m just sayin’.

If you’ve read my posts for awhile, I’m guessing you expect me to say something about Cerridwen (a.k.a. Caldron Anouve). Not wanting to disappoint anyone who’s enough to form an expectation, here’s the short form: wow.

The longer version riffs of Julius saying (11:58) “Just like the watchers, she’s one of the seven legends of the academy. Night after night, she abducts students and conducts experiments on them. The Witch of the Hammer!”

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 08: Witch of the Hammer indeed.

Come to think about it, she didn’t dispute much of what Julius said. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Talk about setting one’s expectations! I bet you can guess what came into my little mind as soon as he said that.

Yes. I’ve watched too much anime and have spent too much time on the internet.

But that wasn’t my favorite moment. Shockingly, it didn’t have anything to do with Cerridwen (or her instructions for Will to disrobe – come on, what possible (rational) reason could she have for such a request? No, my favorite moment is despite my dread that the show’s becoming “Will’s almost there OH NO SOMETHING PREJUDICIAL HAPPENED – the Animation.”

Julius needed a break from training with Will. The guy had been managing multiple clones even while putting Will though his paces, so he was understandably tired. That’s when a group of thugs under the command of that Kreutz guy jumped him.

Delivery: Will Is At Least Consistent

He’s still Jilius. He held them off for a bit. At this point in the episode, I was still kinda rooting for him. Sure, he’s using Will, but a) he’s up front about it and b) Will benefits, too. Plus, Elfaria might actually get to hang out with Will if Julius’ plan succeeds. So, I will rooted for him.

Even better: the goons complaint that they hadn’t been selected, they felt useless, and Kreutz promised he’d write recommendation letters for them. Talk about scummy! What dishonorable behavior. Not to mention naive. I mean, they weren’t selected before. How would a betrayal help matters?

So when I saw him adopt his Last Stand Posture, I was impressed. He turn his arrogance into a psychological attack by saying (08:47), “What a sorry sight! Shackled as tightly as can be by the Upper Institute… I’d rather die than end up as fettered trash like you.”

Of course, they attacked him. Without the energy to respond, he braced himself to take the full force of the attack. That’s when Will swooped in to save him.

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 08: Will often saves people. It's his thing.

Will does this sort of thing a lot. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Kind of expected, right? I mean, he’s Will. But then he did my favorite thing in the episode, which was explain himself, thinking he was being helpful, when he was actually delivering the most painful insult possible.

“I was suddenly attacked by high mages,” he said in a bright voice (10:06). “So I thought you might be in danger, too. Kiki and I came looking!”

The implications (yes, multiple!)? First, that Will stomped his attackers in seconds flat; second, that he knew Julius would need  help; third, that Julius did, in fact, need help, so he couldn’t argue the point.

I guess Will being Will was good to keep me going through another episode. Now, if we can just see his reunion with Elfaria, we can get the plot moving again. What did you think of the confrontation between Iris and Elfaria? What were your favoriote moments? Feel free to share in the comments!
