In Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 episode 09, “The Page to be Turned,” Cerridwen, in an attempt to build on Julius’ plan, sends Will deeply back into his memories. She hopes he will recall the origin of the massive scar on his back – the key to his ability to anchor magic. Can will recall memories he has repressed since childhood? Even if he does, what bearing could that have on the upcoming test? And what role did Elfaria play?

I’m not a fan of false confidence. I’ve seen a lot of people assure me of this or that, only to see reality assert itself. Facts don’t really care about our opinions, after all. That’s a reason I’ve never liked false bravado, even in myself.
When I used to develop software applications (you know – one of the people writing the code that “trained” today’s generative AI), my boss would ask if this or that would work on the first try. Af first, I tried to sound confident, but reality would always step in and adjust my lies.
I finally gave up and decided to be honest. “It should,” I would say and explain why.
That’s why my favorite quote in this episode was from Cerridwen being honest with Julius. Julius demanded to know if her sending Will back into his dreams would really allow him to anchor magic.
Closing her book and smiling beatifically, she said (06:54), “”I’m a teensy bit unsure myself. After all, swords are Finn’s jurisdiction.”
Julius seemed quite put off. I approved of her honesty. That sort of thing inclines me to trust a person even more.

Setup: Not All Smooth Sailing
When my jaded self started watching this episode, I could feel myself cringe. I did not want to watch a trip down memory lane. I did not want to see a smol Elfaria and a smol Will do smol people things.
After episode 7 decided to re-plunge us into the cycle of stuck-up-mage-blocks-Will, I’ve had to manage my expectations regarding this show. Yes, I still enjoy it. No, I’m not going to disparage it. But I’m having a hard time giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Fortunately, the end of this episode helped. Though, between us, I did find the “oh-that’s-my-memory-that-I-forgot-until-now-when-I-conveniently-remembered-it” trope a little long in the tooth (with apologies to my equine friends).
Cerridwen sent Will back into his past where he could reconnect with the memory of his first use of magic. Elfaria’s over confidence had encouraged her to take on a particularly nasty monster (and yes, seeing her use her cloning magic for the first time was pretty cool). Trouble was, this monster reflected magic.
Delivery: It Takes a Team
As in, it reflected her attacks back on him.
Was it cool seeing Will’s ordinarily cowardly self spring into action to save Elfaria? Yes. Yes, it was. Seeing him forge his first sword was very cool.
But what was even cooler was seeing him beginning to lose ground against the monster – until Elfaria grabbed the sword and fought by his side (19:58). Seeing them defeat the creature through their combined efforts was my favorite moment.

It’s not that I dislike individual effort. It’s that I think it’s over-rated and misrepresented. If I write a novel, I can claim to have accomplished it myself – but only if I ignore Apple for creating the laptop I type on, or my family for giving me the space to write, or each and every person I’ve ever met to form my experiences.
We’re in this together. It was nice seeing a scene that reflected that.
