Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 10: Favorites – Quick Summary

In Wistoria – Wand and Sword Season 2 episode 10, “Hoping, Blooming, Thundering,” Cerridwen had done everything she could to prepare Will for his second Blooming. She’s only mostly sure he’ll succeed. Julius, who had trained beside Will, wasn’t even sure. Can Will prevail against this unfair second test? Or can Kreutz come up with yet another way to thwart him – and Elfaria’s dreams?

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 10: Scion turned out pretty well

Scion turned out pretty well. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Gotta say, it’s cool seeing how far Will’s friends will go to support him. They’d only just ascended  to the tower, Wignall, Colette, Lihanna, and Scion all escaped to find Workner – to plan a way to help Will fulfill the obviously unfair mandate from Kreutz.

Lihanna seemed exhausted to the point of of passing out. Colette and Wignall were both indignant. They knew that Workner, too, was worried because of his repeated attempts to contact Will. But he’d been turned away at the gates.

It fell to Scion to put this all in perspective. It looks like he’s come a real friend – not even a tsundere anymore. He basically told them they were wasting their time. I think Colette feared a regression; that Scion had suddenly reverted to being Will’s enemy.

But he said that he’d gone along with them to keep them out of trouble. Why? Because Will didn’t need their help.

“He was told over and over it couldn’t be done,” Scion said calmly (04:00). “But look how far he’s come… if someone swoops in now, he won’t be able to show off what he can do, right?”

Of all of them, Scion had the best understanding of who Will was, and what he could do. What’s more, he was willing to stick up for Will while supporting his other friends, too. I could use more folks like that in my life!

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 10: Zeo doesn't hold back

Zeo seemed pleased with the results. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: : This Feels Familiar

I think I’m going to have to resign myself to the idea that this show is going to be about Will not getting to enjoy time with Elfaria. Even after getting my hopes up – Elfaria throwing herself on Will (19:20) was a very warm moment – the show returned to form.

So, I have a choice: accept that and get on with my life or complain relentlessly. Well, if I could change my expectations for takt.OP Destiny, I can do it for this show. But I’m doing so under protest!

Backing up a few minutes from their emotionally satisfying hug, there was a moment when I thought that Kreutz and his allies, willing or otherwise, were going to once again keep Will and Elfaria apart. Honestly, that annoyed me to no end. Yes, I’m all about pacing and drama and the hero overcoming roadblocks, but come on!

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 10: Kreutz remains a jerk

I feel bad for the poor guy on the right – he can’t have a good time with a boss like that! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream

And Kreutz is annoying to close to many folks in real life. Just for once, I’d like to see them get what’s coming to them. And do you know what? The show did two things I didn’t expect.

First, it gave me a fantastic closure. Kreutz succeed in manufacturing doubt about Will’s ascension even after Will cleared the test. The Dark Faction, for one, agreed that Will’s situation was so unique that it required more study. Elfaria was close to going super critical at that point.

To file under “Better late than never,” Sarissa saw Elfaria’s condition and wondered if there was any way to gain allies among the other factions. Sarissa knew anything Elfaria did would seem biased. And she was only now looking for allies?

Delivery: Zeo’s Lightning Strike

Anyway, while Will’s fate teetered on the edge, the Magia Vander named Zeo Torzeus Reinbolt (Fujino Ōmori, the writer, likes on-the-nose names, doesn’t he?) stood up and said he was pretty much done with pointless arguing. He reasoned that if Will could take a direct hit from a Magia Vander (i.e., himself), then Will belonged. Whereupon he loosed a massive lightning bolt into Will’s face.

How confident was Elfaria that he could handle it? Surprisingly, not at all. She screamed him to run for it. But if there’s one thing Will sucks at, it’s running away. He used his new Wis skill (magical ability?) to absorb half the bolt to defend against the other half. He withstood the strike, and didn’t vaporize while doing so.

“You survived a direct hit from me!” Zeo declared (18:05). “You all saw that, didn’t you?! He took a shot from a Magia Vander and he’s still standing! There’s no better proof than that! I acknowledge you. You do not belong at the bottom. Make your way to the top, Will Serfort!”

Wistoria - Wand and Sword Season 2 Episode 10: Elfaria finally got to hug Will -- if only briefly

Will did well to catch Elfaria, given how far she’d jumped! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream

How cool was that? One of the hot-headed, combat-oriented Magia Vander publicly declared his support for Will. That worked for me – more so because Zeo prides himself in combat. His endorsement carried a lot of weight.

Second, it taught me that no, seeing Kreutz humiliated wasn’t that great. Sure, it was fun to see him instantly capitulate in the face of Zeo’s threat. But after seeing Will succeed, I no longer cared for what happened to Kreutz.

Honestly, it restored a little of my faith in humanity!
