Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 12: Kogarashi was used to morning air time

I hope he gets frequent flyer miles. Do they still award those? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

This episode gave us the obligatory Suntan Lotion Application Event. Looking back, I’m a little surprised we didn’t see it as part of episode 10. Though to be fair, they had to make room for the tentacles.

It’s important to balance the tropes.

Nonko kicked things off by asking Kogarashi to apply lotion, and her vocal performance made Kogarashi very uneasy. On the other hand, it inspired Oboro, who asked for her turn, too. Kogarashi obliged, though he was more anxious about Oboro than Nonko. I think he knows Nonko’s just teasing. Oboro’s motivations are more complicated.

Nonko, having an eye for such things, noticed Yuuna wanted her turn, and Nonko said so. She then provided the audio soundtrack while Kogarashi applied the lotion. Which is to say she turned the experience more erotic than it already was. Which flustered Kogarashi, who slipped and grabbed – well, let’s just say he recreated his morning ritual with Yuuna. Of course, Kogarashi’s slip had the expected effect. Yuuna’s blind panic sent Kogarshi flying into the air.

“We may have set a height record here,” he said calmly (05:56).

He seemed to have figured this would happen. Good thing he’s nearly indestructible!

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 12: Better late than never

To be filed under “Better Late Than Never…” Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Redemption Arcs are Cool

I like redemption arcs. I’m picking one as my favorite moment of the episode. The fact it’s tiny – under half an episode long! – just makes it more endearing.

Remember my favorite quote? While Kogarashi enjoyed his airtime, he caught sight of a ghost. He learned she was Ami, who was a bound ghost. The lingering regret that tied her to this world dealt with her boyfriend, Yasuhisa, who, on his way to elope with her, crashed and died.

Pretty sad, right? Kogarashi and Yuuna both wanted to help out. They were mildly surprised, as was I, to learn that Yasuhisa’s ghost was just a couple hundred yards away! In fact, they could clearly see him! So, they headed over to chat.

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 12: Kogarashi and Yuuna were surprised that Yasuhisa was so close to Ami

They thought he’d be farther away. At least out of sight. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Kogarashi assumed, as did I, that Yasuhisa was a bound spirit. Nope! Dude was simply terrified of facing Ami. He knew she’d be angry with him. Turns out she hadn’t told the whole story. Yes, Yasuhisa crashed, but she dove into the ocean in an attempt to save him. It was a noble effort, but both of them died. So Yasuhisa just couldn’t face her.

Now, I find it terribly hard to respect people who chose to be weak. Ami was right there. All the dude had to do was float over and apologize. Or thank her for trying. Or something! But to doom her to stand there, invisible to almost everyone, until she turned into an evil spirit? Not cool.

Kogarashi tried to convince him to man up. But it didn’t work. So, Kogarashi said he had no choice. He was going to force-ascend Ami.

Delivery: Yasuhisa Steps Up

It was a trick, of course. Kogarashi even clued Ami in. For a brief moment, it didn’t look like the plan worked. But then they saw Yasuhisa trying (unsuccessfully) to hide behind a tree. Ami, overcome with emotion, floated very quickly toward him. Yuuna thought she was about to witness a beautiful reunion.

“Well, hello there!” Ami roared, nailing Yasuhisa’s chin with an upper cut (13:45). She had good form, too. Kogarashi and Yuuna could only watch in shock as she pounded on the poor Yasuhisa. He tried to apologize, but she kept smacking him. It got the point where Kogarashi and Yuuna wondered if they’d done the right thing.

Then Ami, her fury spent, got to the point: she’d waited for him all these years. She’d been all alone.

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 12: Ami finally said what was bothering her

Ami finally said what was on her mind. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Remember how I said I liked redemption arcs? Yasuhisa finally stepped up. Whether he just took advantage of a lull in the flying fists, or her expressing her true feelings emboldened him, he threw his arms around her and hugged her (14:12).

He thanked her for waiting all that time. She thanked him for finally coming to see her. And just like that, they healed each other’s regrets and ascended.

Yeah, it’s probably corny. But I liked it. I not only got a mini-redemption arc. I got to see two people reconciled. That’s also very cool.
