Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 2: Sagiri is pretty handle with her blades

She’s pretty handy with those things. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

We found in the first episode that Kogarashi is a fundamentally nice guy. He didn’t hesitate to protect the elderly couple from a ghost. He didn’t shy away from protecting Yuuna from Sekkan’s first visit.

Then Sekkan showed up. This time, he brought reinforcements. Lots of them. He had apparently learned his lesson. Namely, that Kogarashi can punch his lights out.

Things got more tense when Sekkan and his followers realized the entire house was full of supernatural beings. Though his followers were initially hesitant, Sekkan promised that his monks could basically do anything they wanted with the women after they were captured. All of the monks attacked at once.

We know Kogarashi wants to do the right thing. He said all of them should hide inside. He planned to take on the entire army himself.

Sagiri Ameno leapt onto the roof and said (09:00), “No, you should get back.”

She then unleashed a massive attack that shocked Kogarashi as much as it shocked me the first time I watched it. It was so unexpected that I had to name it my favorite quote.

Also, given how much I like strong female characters, it was this quote that made me realize I was going to enjoy this.

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 2: Kogarashi knows how to return a serve

Dude was not messing around! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I really started to feel sorry for Kogarashi in this episode. Sure, young men his age dream of waking up with someone like Yuuna. But the cost is pretty high! Not only that, but Sagiri is always on his case though he’s nothing to deserve that. And then there was the whole incident with him petting the kitty. That turned out to be Yaya Fushiguro.

Yaya did not react well. In her defense, she was minding her own business and didn’t want to be petted. Even with my own cat, I won’t pet her if she doesn’t want me to. I mean, it’s her little kitty body, and if she doesn’t want cuddles, she doesn’t have to put up with cuddles. Yaya’s the same way.

Still, I felt bad for Kogarashi. Dude’s looking for peace and quiet. He’s looking for a place he can relax. Having Sagiri always on his case was bad enough, but now he had Yaya as an enemy. Worse, both went to the landlady, Nakai Chitose, and petitioned to have Kogarashi kicked out.

According to the house rules, they had to play a game of ping-pong. Sagiri and Yaya both had supernatural powers. They were up against a mere human and a wimpy-looking ghost. They thought they’d win easily.

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 2: Sagiri and Yaya did not expect Kogarashi to return the serve

Well, that didn’t go according to plan. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Yaya served with her hands converted to cat’s paws. The ball rocketed across the table, right at Kogarashi. Notice that I didn’t say “straight at” Kogarashi. The ball moved all ovder the place. There seemed to be no way he could return such a powerful serve.

He nailed it (16:48). He slammed the ball right back at them. They barely had time to register that he’d returned it when it bounced off the wall behind them.

Turns out Kogarashi had once been possessed by the spirit of a ping-pong coach. He hated the game. But he learned it – and learned it well! Much to Sagiri and Yaya’s surprise!

  1. I love the repeating joke that Kogarashi was once possessed by “insert professional” and that means he’s incredible at “blank”. I thought it would get old at first, but they used it just the right amount to keep it from getting stale.

    1. It really helped that the joke fit so well with whatever was going on. Him being an expert ping pong player felt completely unexpected, but it fit so well!
