Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 5 – Quick Summary
In Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 5, “Yuuna’s Body Measurements / Nonko’s Crunch Time,” Chisaki Miyazaki wanted to communicate with Yuuna. But she didn’t want to undergo the ten years of training or – not surprisingly – go through a near death experience. Can Kogarashi come up with a plan to help her out? Nonko Arahabaki turned out to be a mangaka – who’s almost late on her next installment. Can she give up alcohol long enough to finish?

Favorite Quote from Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 5
Yuuna really enjoyed “chatting” with Chisaki. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
This show continues to win me over with moments of warmth. Instead of beats purely for comedy, the show takes the extra step of showing us something about the characters. And these are some caring folks we’re dealing with.
Take my favorite quote, for example. Chisaki showed her bravery and curiosity when she expressed an interest in talking to Yuuna. Yuuna was a ghost, and most folks would be freaked out. But she’d seen the effects of Yuuna helping Kogarashi, so she could overcome any fear. And given she’s an intelligent young woman, of course she’d be curious, if she could get past her fear!
What I hadn’t anticipated was Yuuna’s reaction. Yuuna decided to help Chisaki organize some books after class, which was a punishment for Chisaki not paying attention (she’d been writing back and forth to Yuuna). Yuuna apologized for getting her into trouble. Then Yuuna said (05:44), “”Even though you can’t see me, you’re the first person who’s ever talked to me like this, so I couldn’t help being excited.”
I enjoyed seeing Yuuna so happy and expressing herself with such shy reserve. I could really see the two of them becoming friends.
Favorite Moment from Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Episode 5
Nonko knew exactly what angles she wanted. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Nonko for the Win
I’ve been thinking about a scene from this episode on and off since I say it shortly after release. It’s like it brings together all of my favorite things in a character. I want to give you enough description so you can see why I like this moment so much.
Seriously, it’s rare when so many of the tropes I like come together in such a seamless way.
We all pick a favorite character in a harem, don’t we? Well, if you like the show, anyway. The first time I watched this series, I could not decide who my favorite character was. That is, I couldn’t decide, until this episode, when Nonko took a clear lead – a lead she never relinquished.
She’s strong. We saw that back in episode 2 when she went bowling – with monks. She’s a free spirit, as we’ve seen on and off as she’s gone on drinking binges or flirted shamelessly with Kogarashi. I mean “shamelessly” literally. The woman felt zero guilt or shame at a level of flirtation that seemed as natural to her as breathing.
Nonko seemed seriously pleased that Kogarashi learned she was a mangaka. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Have you seen her utter a single nasty comment? A snide remark? I haven’t. So we can add a general level of civility, bordering on flat-out kindness to a list of her features.
But in this episode, she clinched the title of my favorite character. Why? Because in this episode, we learned she’s a writer. She procrastinates, sure. But as the deadline approached, she became more and more serious. I can’t tell you how much I respect that!
In my favorite moment, she brought all those things together. And on top of all that, she subverted the trope where the girl trips and ends up with her underwear in the main character’s face.
Nonko had run into a wall. She needed inspiration. So, she asked Kogarashi to help her act out the scene. To preserve the moments and get the right angles, she asked her editor, Rui Harashima, to photograph the whole thing.
Delivery: Nonko, a Serious Professional
Kogarashi’s a strong man, but he’s a little shy, when it comes down to it. So when Nonko told him to ravish her, saying he was tentative was understating matters. As he more or less hovered in her general vicinity, Rui showed the pictures she’d gotten so far. Rui suggested that Kogarashi really didn’t seem to be into it. Nonko agreed, saying (16:00), “I want it to be more like you’re ravaging me.”
This isn’t some kid playing at being sexy. Nonko had a clear idea of what she wanted, and like the professional writer she was, she was going to get it. When she told him to try putting his hand under her skirt, he almost walked out of the room.
But she knew how to get him to focus. She asked him to remember this was for her work, and she needed the reference shots. Realizing he was hindering her by being so tentative, he resolved to throw himself into the role. He grabbed her – but being the gentleman he is, he asked if that was right.
Rui and Nonko expressed concern that Kogarashi held back. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
And being the processional she was, she confirmed that yep, he was on the right track. She told him to rip her blouse off and throw her onto the bed. He did his best.
A lesser show might have devolved into embarrassment. But they set up my favorite moment perfectly. Instead of one or the other of them losing their nerve, they stayed in character. Except for the brief moments where Nonko directed Rui to take specific shots.
Ahe she lay on the bed, Kogarashi straddling her, she said (17:09), “Rui-chan, get a high-angle shot from there and there… Change the angle a bit for multiple patterns!”
I loved seeing Nonko so serious about her work. Likewise, it was a blast seeing her walk through Kogarashi’s bashful reluctance to help until she’d invoked his sense of responsibility. From start to finish, she was in complete control, and it was awesome to watch.
What did you think of the story of Nonko’s childhood? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
